December 2011

An intriguing Saturday card opens with a bottom rung maiden claiming dash for older fillies and mares. #3 Amelia Rose, beaten as the choice in a similar spot earlier this month at Hollywood Park, gets a chance to make amends and really doesn’t have much to beat. She has the fastest figs in the field and rates top billing. #7 Tiabelle has more zip than the favorite and will take them as far as she can. Her kind of early speed could stick much better on conventional dirt than it did over the all weather at Hollywood Park.

The Friday opener looks well tailored for #5 Here Comes Bonnie. The daughter of Benchmark was nosed out earlier this month at Hollywood Park while stepping forward following a disappointing debut, and we’re expecting even more improvement today following a sharp :59 1/5 drill since that race. Espinoza rides her back for Cassidy and should have her along in time. Stranger danger may come from #8 Warren’s Samantha, a first timer from the Guiterrez barn who has worked reasonably well and lands Bejarano.

There’s a $148,184 Pick-6 carryover today beginning with the 3rd race. First post time is 1 p.m.

The opening day program begins with the fillies division of the California Breeders’ Champion Stakes and #6 Ismene is listed as the 6/5 morning line favorite to extend her unbeaten winning streak to three. The daughter of Tribal Rule won the Anoakia Stakes over this track during the autumn meeting – beating an open field in the process – and today returns to state bred company while breaking from the comfortable outside post.
